My business Surf With Amigas is the proud sponsor of the Waves of Hope sea turtle project. In Nicaragua sea turtle eggs are collected for food. Poachers roam the beach at night looking for turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. In the morning, tracks lead poachers to a nest in the sand and the eggs are dug up to be consumed or sold. The people are poor, so rather than just telling poachers not to poach (which wouldn’t work), Waves of Hope buys the eggs at market value (about $1.25/dozen) and then re-buries them in our guarded hatchery. 45-57 days later, the eggs hatch, the turtles are collected and then released at sunset to give them the best chance of survival.
The baby turtles are super cute and Luna was very interested in the commotion of babies waiting to be released.
One little turtle even took a detour and climbed up over the little girl’s foot. So cute!
