Beach Baby Photos

Little Luna is growing up so fast. She’s now 4.5 months old and really getting into the beach lifestyle. She loves the ocean! Her skin is really fair, so I try to keep her covered up if we play at the beach midday. I found this super cute little full-body zip-up rashguard by SwimZip. It’s called “sassy surfer” which of course I find very appropriate. The hat is by IPlay.

During a retreat last month we had an Amiga who is an amazing photographer by the name of Abbey Moore. She shot these gorgeous photos of my girl and I playing at the beach. Check out her site via the link for more photos from our home in Nicaragua.beach baby with mama

Luna Loves Baby Turtles

luna turtlesMy business Surf With Amigas is the proud sponsor of the Waves of Hope sea turtle project. In Nicaragua sea turtle eggs are collected for food. Poachers roam the beach at night looking for turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. In the morning, tracks lead poachers to a nest in the sand and the eggs are dug up to be consumed or sold. The people are poor, so rather than just telling poachers not to poach (which wouldn’t work), Waves of Hope buys the eggs at market value (about $1.25/dozen) and then re-buries them in our guarded hatchery. 45-57 days later, the eggs hatch, the turtles are collected and then released at sunset to give them the best chance of survival.

It’s A Race Between House and Baby – Part 2

I’m now just a half-week shy of being six months pregnant. Time is flying, my belly is growing, and the house is progressing more or less on schedule. It’s exciting to see the roof go on and know that pouring the concrete floor is next. After that, it’s time to decorate with paint and tile and all the fun things like kitchen counters, etc.

As of right now, it looks like the house just might be finished in time to move in a little before the baby comes. Fingers crossed! Click play below for a tour of the house in progress.

Healthy Living – Homemade Yogurt from Grass-fed Cows

I love yogurt with my granola and fruit in the morning, particularly homemade yogurt made with milk from cows that I pass on the beach every morning and evening. Living in Nicaragua has it’s downsides (a shortage of farmer’s markets selling things like organic veggies), but it also has its perks! We are surrounded by neighbors with herds of grass-fed cattle. The cow herders take their charges on daily walks to grazing pastures and our closest neighbor’s cows happen to make their commute along the beach at sunrise and sunset. It’s hard to imagine a happier cow than one that gets to slosh through the warm shorebreak on it’s way to grass grazing.  Continue reading Healthy Living – Homemade Yogurt from Grass-fed Cows

Video of a Calm Home Water Birth

I hate hospitals. They just freak me out. Full of germs, sick people, dying people. I can’t imagine relaxing in a hospital, and the thought of spending so much time there was one reason why getting pregnant seemed incredibly scary. It wasn’t just the idea of giving birth that made me nervous, but the idea of spending so much time in a hospital. Continue reading Video of a Calm Home Water Birth
