Mom Life in Costa Rica

I quit breastfeeding in February and over the next few months, starting feeling like I was reclaiming my body and mind just a bit. My kids are still very attached. We co-sleep and co-nap, but not needing to rush in from the surf to breastfeed every couple hours has given me a lot more time and flexibility to reconnect to myself and my surfing.

Due to the civil unrest in Nicaragua that’s been happening since April, we have been hanging out in Southern Costa Rica. I miss our home in Nica, but it’s also been great to hang out on the shady, jungle fringed beaches and surf super long left point breaks on every swell.

Here’s a highlight video from a couple of good swells where I was able to dawn patrol the point, then come home, have breakfast, grab the kids, and cruise down to the mellower spots to catch a few waves with the kids.

Life is good.

Family Friendly Surf Retreat

Now that I have kids, it’s so awesome when I can bring them to work with me. My surf yoga retreat business, Surf With Amigas, has recently begun adding family friendly retreats. It’s so awesome to have returning Amigas come back with their husbands and kids to share the adventure with the whole family. My kids are always stoked to participate and are inspired by the older kids.

Here’s the highlight video from a recent retreat. I can’t wait for the next one!

Surfing with Kids age 3.5 and 18 months

Surfing with my kids has been a dream come true. The past week in Costa Rica has had pumping waves, and for the most part my kids are hanging on the beach with our awesome nanny while mama gets some turns in. Towards the end of the swell there were some super smooth easy peelers coming in at the bottom of the point. I asked Soleo if he wanted to catch a wave and he shook his head no, until Luna agreed. She’s 3.5 and got excited. After 18 month old Soleo watched his sister ride a wave, he was eager to get one too.

Wagon Ride to Beach Play

With two little ones it has been a struggle to get both down to the beach at times. We live a short walk away, but a short walk for us is still a long one for little legs. My husband Kim bought a wagon frame and wheels in the states, brought it down and added a wooden seat. Now walks to the beach are so much easier. The kids think it’s really fun to ride!

Luna is starting to get into riding a surfboard in very tiny waves and Soleo just loves running around in the sand and pointing at birds.

Back in the Water after 3 months

luna sling 5 weeksAfter three months without paddling out, i’m finally back in the water. When Luna was about 3 weeks old I started taking her on beach walks with the dogs in the mornings. I wrapped her up in a sling, covered her head with a little hat and we’d walk down to the ocean with the dogs and look at the waves. It seemed impossible to leave her on the beach and out of my arms for any length of time, but day by day I got more and more eager to catch a wave.
