Waterfall Afternoon

kim luna waterfallEvery afternoon he takes her to the waterfall. It’s a short walk. It’s a small waterfall. Just a trickle really, but there’s a cool little pool there. Waist deep on him. Just enough space for her. “kick kick kick”. “splash splash splash”.

She gasps at the chilly water. Every time. But if you put her in slowly, she starts smiling. She doesn’t mind the waterfall droplets on her face. Her little tongue twists and curls in delight – a new thing, this control of her tongue. Two tiny lower teeth show in her smile.

Usually I’m surfing. Cheering Amigas into waves. Hoping for some sharp turns of my own. But today is particularly hot.

So while the girls stretch out in the shade of a sea-view yoga platform the three of us sneak off to the waterfall. I trail behind them a few steps clicking away at the shutter button. Capturing their time together. This precious moment, so fleeting. She’s nearly 7 months old already and growing so fast, Learning so much. It’s true what they say.

The jungle is heavy around us. Toucans, scarlet macaws, green vine snakes, squirrel monkeys. Yesterday they watched the monkeys up close from the coolness of the pool. Last night we saw the long-tailed silhouettes in the trees above us. A family of more than a dozen complete with a baby-toting mother flying between coco fronds. We were sandy and salty looking up as the last light faded, this curious little naked creature in arms, and I.

Now it’s daddy time. He points out shrimp in the pool, lifts a leaf, raises her above his head to get the giggles going. I balance on a rock looking through the lens at a scene I can hardly believe is my reality. Appreciating.

Hot air, green rustling leaves, pounding surf, falling water, and my two loves.

My Friend Corinne is a Super Mama

I met Corinne Gold when I was modeling for Athleta in 2010. We spent a week shooting photos in Panama and I was inspired by her fun-loving spirit and awesome attitude. Check out a couple photos from the catalog below.

We kept in touch via facebook and I watched inspired as she surfed through her pregnancy, bounced back into model shape immediately, and then became pregnant again. Now that I have a six month old, I’m starting to mentally adjust to the idea of having a second one. I’m definitely not ready. My little girl keeps me plenty busy and the thought of going through the whole pregnancy, birth, and 4th trimester again does not sound good at all! BUT, I know I want Luna to have a sibling, so I’m super inspired when I see photos like this of Corinne balancing both kids and her own need for fun and fitness. Thanks Corinne! Body Glove Surf Leggings

Living in Nicaragua I don’t worry too much about fashion. I wear the same thing every day. It definitely makes life easier that way. BUT, in running the Surf With Amigas retreats, I’m constantly exposed to ladies with super cute yoga and surf wear. Sometimes I feel like I need to upgrade my situation in order to fit in. Luckily, I picked up some new leggings by Body Glove. They’re made out of bathing suit material so they’re great for surf, yoga, or just hanging out in the tropics. They’re super cute and functional. I got tons of compliments on them right away! Here are some photos from a typical day at work/play!

A Day In The Life at 4.5 Months

Set a goal, attract what you want, work hard, and live your dream. After loving life as a competitive pro surfer, then a pro free surfer, building a business and relocating full time to Nicaragua, I wanted to have a family. I’m now happily married living in a house that we built with our two dogs and a 4.5 month old baby girl Luna. Here’s a little video sample of daily life on a day off from running my Surf Yoga Retreat business. Life is good!Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 11.22.16 AM

Beach Baby Photos

Little Luna is growing up so fast. She’s now 4.5 months old and really getting into the beach lifestyle. She loves the ocean! Her skin is really fair, so I try to keep her covered up if we play at the beach midday. I found this super cute little full-body zip-up rashguard by SwimZip. It’s called “sassy surfer” which of course I find very appropriate. The hat is by IPlay.

During a retreat last month we had an Amiga who is an amazing photographer by the name of Abbey Moore. She shot these gorgeous photos of my girl and I playing at the beach. Check out her site via the link for more photos from our home in Nicaragua.beach baby with mama

We Got a Washing Machine!

This may not sound like an exciting blog post to you, but let me tell you, it’s super exciting for me!

The first year or so that I lived in Nicaragua I took pride in the fact that I washed my clothes by hand and hung them to dry in the sun. How eco-friendly of me! Right? Well, it also chaps my hands and hurts my back and takes a really long time! I spent 3 years doing it. We ended up wearing clothes dirty just to save the hassle, and down here it doesn’t really matter.  Continue reading We Got a Washing Machine!

Luna Loves Baby Turtles

luna turtlesMy business Surf With Amigas is the proud sponsor of the Waves of Hope sea turtle project. In Nicaragua sea turtle eggs are collected for food. Poachers roam the beach at night looking for turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. In the morning, tracks lead poachers to a nest in the sand and the eggs are dug up to be consumed or sold. The people are poor, so rather than just telling poachers not to poach (which wouldn’t work), Waves of Hope buys the eggs at market value (about $1.25/dozen) and then re-buries them in our guarded hatchery. 45-57 days later, the eggs hatch, the turtles are collected and then released at sunset to give them the best chance of survival.

Luna Goes to the Cove

When we planned to head back to Los Angeles for Christmas I was really excited to pull on a thick wetsuit and paddle out into the cold clear kelpy water. The beach is so hot in Nicaragua and I was looking forward to bundling up my little bundle and chilling along the Southern Californian coastline.
